Jane Doe IV said that she knew nothing about sexual intercourse, how babies were made or male anatomy when at the age of 14 she married her 19 year old cousin. After the first time her husband took her against her will Doe went into the bathroom and swallowed a bottle of Ibuprofen and Tylenol “I wanted to die” she said.
During her testimony on Friday morning doe broke down in tears and asked judge James H. Shumate for a short break to compose herself.
Jane Doe was the first witness called to testify in the jeffs trial of Warren Steed Jeffs on two charges of rape as an accomplice for allegedly arranging the marriage between the young girl and her cousin.
During The trial Doe talked about growing up in the FLDS Church.
When she was told that she would be married she pleaded with Rulon Jeffs (Warren Steed Jeffs father and the leader of the FLDS Church at the time) and told him she did not feel she was ready to be married.
“He put his hand on my head and told me to follow my heart and to keep sweet” “I was so grateful” Doe said tearfully.
But minutes later she was told by Warren Steed Jeffs that “ her heart was in the wrong place and this (marriage) is what the prophet directed her to do.
And so Doe along with her sisters Ruby and Annie were married in a hotel in Caliente NV.
Rubies Husband was in his 20’s and Rubies Husband was in his 30’s when the girls were married.
Doe said that she cried and pleaded with her husband the first time he took her against her will.
During the opening Statements of the Jeffs trial Warren Steed Jeffs defense attorney Tara Isaacson asked if a rape even occurred and if so did Warren Steed jeffs even know about it?
Doe replied by saying that she talked to Warren Steed Jeffs and told him that her husband was touching her in places that she did not want to be touched and was doing things that she didn’t like.
Warren Steed Jeffs reply was that she should Repent and give herself to her husband mind, body and soul.
Later Friday afternoon tapes were played of Warren Steed Jeffs teaching home economics at the Alta Academy in Salt Lake City.
One Tape talked had Warren telling the girls to keep the “bars up” and have resistance towards men, until a man is chosen for her at which time she should let her “bars down”
And that each morning a wife shall rejoice in her husbands will.
“A Woman obeys a man as far as a man obeys the prophet”
After an hour of listening to the tapes of Warren Steed Jeffs several people including jeffs Nodded off after which the prosecution and defense teams decided not to play the next hour worth of tapes and recessed early for the weekend.
